Philips CSMART: Typical Projector Lamp

The Philips CSMART projector is one in a long line of very high quality projectors produced by Philips over the past five years. One of the most impressive features about this projector is its projector lamp. The lamp is rated 120W and lasts a dazzling 6000 hours.

As mentioned in previous articles, Philips projectors typically have superior projector lamp life and quality because Philips invented the modern day projector lamp. They were the first to tweak metal halide lamps and replace them with UHP projector lamps. UHP projector lamps allow for much higher lumens rates, which make the images that the projectors produce much brighter.

Philips, however, seems to keep their most secretive projector lamp technology to themselves. For instance, the projector lamp on the Philips CSMART lasts for 6000 hours. There are currently very few projector lamps on the market, still today, that will run for 6000 hours and that leads to speculation that Philips covets and holds close their 6000 hour projector lamp technology.

As for the Philips CSMART projector, it boasts some pretty stunning specs. For example, the projector operates with a contrast ratio of 350:1; a level well above other projectors manufactured around the same time (2001). The projector also operates with an aspect ratio of 4:3. One draw back of the projector is that it does not have HDTV capability. If you are considering purchasing this unit, you may want to be aware of this fact – the CSMART is best suited for an office or school environment where a lot of presentations will be used in tandem with the projector.

We tested the CSMART projector with a couple of Microsoft PowerPoint presentations and it really performed quite beautifully. The images were crisp and the projector was relatively quiet – the cooling fan that keeps the projector lamp from overheating remained pretty silent throughout the test.
