The Projector Lamp and Brightness

If you ever read the specifications of projectors on a regular basis like I do you will notice a certain relation between the projector lamp used and the brightness of the projected image. As the wattage of the lamp that is being used gets higher, the lumens are increased. This should make a lot of sense since the more wattage a lamp outputs, the more powerful and thus bright the light should be. This seems to be the rule, but rules have been made to be broken.

People are using lots of energy to power their lives and the entertainment industry isn’t exactly making it easy for people to conserve our precious resources. Everybody wants a brighter screen so that their image isn’t compromised in regards to clarity. But much like Jerry Seinfeld’s famous comedy sketch about Tide Detergent and how it always keeps getting better and making clothes brighter, when will the projector manufacturers understand when it is enough?

I don’t mean to be a bummer about the whole issue, but I know that I am using a lot energy to power my projector and I want to know what companies are doing to reduce the energy consumption.

One way to possibly get around the whole idea is to create a lower wattage projector lamp that is brighter. This way, you really don’t have to waste any more energy and the projector fanatics don’t get alienated. There are some companies that have invested in research into projector lamps and their construction in order to provide a brighter lamp that will save you money on energy costs as well.

Many projector manufacturers have tried to lower the wattage but there are others who are pumping it out without a care. Like the new Runco VX-40D projector that shoots out 4000 ANSI lumens and uses a 1000W Xenon projector lamp. The projector lamp only lasts 1000 hours and you are using 5 times as much energy. Perhaps, if you are designing your home theatre and you want to save energy costs, you should consider employing other techniques to ensure your image is bright rather than spending a lot of dough on an expensively bright projector. The debate will continue in further articles so feel free to write and add your opinion.
