HP Pushes the DVD Projector to New Levels

Hewlett Packard, a company that is already plagued with financial trouble arising from poor business decisions, is driving hard into the “Apple� market with its DVD projector combo.

Much like the way Apple promotes its new line of iMac’s, an all in one combo composed of a monitor with a hard drive tucked neatly inside, HP is putting together its own pretty thing. The HP ep9010 is an instant cinema that requires no wires connecting into anything but the wall itself.

There obviously is a huge market for the cutesy, tight, funky yet functional side of electronics. Apple has exposed it to everyone and is proving that the aesthetics of a piece of machinery are as important as the intelligence inside.

HP sees the trend and has built a sleek, two-shades of gray, DVD projector combination that includes a speaker system. I find it hard to believe that speakers within this small projector system can deliver what is expected of our current projector aficionados.

The projector crowd, seems to be for the most part, composed of people who are willing to go that extra mile to make their home theatre a great overall experience. Marketing to this crowd would not be the best bet for Hewlett Packard.

The speakers as I mentioned before, do sound surprisingly good for a sound system built into the architecture of a projector. The HP ep9010 should sell well with those who want a quick to set-up no hassle projector. For instance, if you want an impromptu viewing experience in your back yard, there no need to unplug the DVD player and drag out the speakers. Just one cord for the projector and you are good to go.

There has to be some downsides to this all-in-one, other than the fact that it will not be as good as a proper home theatre. Putting so many things together in a small space can cramp the style, overheating may become a problem. All of us who own projectors know that the projector itself can overheat.

The projector lamp inside must be well ventilated otherwise it can reduce lamp life. The fan inside must overexert itself in order to keep up with the heat produced from the lamp otherwise the machine might shut itself down. If you have all these different components rolled into one, it will be hard to keep them cool and out of each others way.

Will this concept ever float? It is difficult to determine since the price tag of the HP ep9010 is $2500 US, and not many will want to dish out the cash to become a part of the experiment.
