How To Get Better Contrast

What exactly produces a better contrast? And why is it so darn expensive? Infocus seems to be coming up with some answers and they are bringing down the competition with their fierce prices.

Combining their forces with Texas Instruments of course, as all manufacturers of DLP projectors do, Infocus is really working hard on contrast by using the Darkchip invented by TI. The DLP chip itself is made up microscopic mirrors and with each generation, the number of mirrors available on the chip seems to be increasing. The resolution provided by the DLP chip combined with the Darkchip technology, give great picture and contrast.

So what does all this mumbo jumbo mean? Well, with the new generation of DLP chips, the spaces between the mirrors have become smaller, and therefore there is more control over the light that is bouncing off. If there are spaces between the mirrors, then more light is lost and there are more chances of having fuzzy images. It is hard to control the shape of the mirrors since they are so small, but they have managed to flatten out the mirror even more to reflect more light.

There is a multi-layer coating that is squirted out on the underneath of the mirrors, which absorbs the light allowing for darker blacks and deeper contrast. You might be asking yourself why would you want to reflect light while at the same time absorb light. Well, the stray light is what is absorbed into the coating preventing any misinterpretations onto the image. This is because there still are spaces in between the mirrors, and as small as they are, light manages to get in. With the new technology, only the “good light” gets reflected and the stray light that might usually bounce off in the wrong directions gets sucked into the void and is gone forever.

Now, to tie everything together, Infocus has incorporated the latest Darkchip3 technology into its 7210 DLP projector and marked its price-point at around $7000 dollars. If you are a serious contrast nut that is in need of a sharper image and brightness that is all combined in one package for a relatively low price, then you should do a test on the 7210. Because, we certainly will, and you will hear about it.
