BENQ DX660, The Leader In Brightness

Brighter projectors tend not to have long lamp life, and this is what prevented normal consumers from wanting to buy these machines. It wasn’t until manufacturers like BENQ came out with projectors like the DX660, that brightness became affordable.

The year was 2002, Salt Lake City was about to host the Winter Olympics, and a new projector was introduced by BENQ that boasted 2000 ANSI lumens of ice cold brightness. The beauty about BENQ is that most of their projectors are priced to sell. It came out with a price tag of around $2200 US. This time however, you wouldn’t have to buy another lamp for at least a couple of years, as long as you didn’t abuse the projector.

The BENQ DX660 has a lamp life of 2000 hours, and this is quite amazing considering its brightness. It employs a 210W projector lamp, combined with an ultra efficient cooling system. The cooling system is what allows this lamp to last as long as it does.

The BENQ DX660 is a DLP projector, but unless you are ultra-sensitive, you most likely will not see any rainbows Dorothy. Resolution is pretty slick at 1024x768 native, and a compression ability of up to 1280x1024p. This sickeningly wonderful resolution is coupled with HDTV at 1080i making viewing a pleasure, especially if you spend a little extra for those HD Sports channels.

Contrast is a little rough around the edges sitting at 600:1. Fast Forward to the 2006 Winter Olympics : watching the day time sports definitely don’ t make as much of a difference compared to the night time sports that played outside. The black night sky doesn’t seem as black compared to the well lit snow where the lights striking.

The DX660 also has Picture-in-Picture as well as a great deal of inputs. Considering that it has been a couple of years since it came out, you may be able to get one for cheap. Projector lamps shock (finding out the price of a new lamp) has certainly become less intense as the BENQ’s DX660 makes the brighter picture more affordable.
